Varanthapilly Grama Panchayat Geography

Varantharappilly Panchayat is located on the eastern border of Thrissur district. This panchayat has 22 wards. They are spread over three villages namely Mupliam, Nanthipulam and Varantharappilly. Nanthipulam village comprises wards 16,18,19,20, Varantharappilly village comprises wards 1 to 3 inclusive, wards 12, 13,17,21,22 and Mupliam village comprises wards 10,11,14,15. This panchayat, which falls under the Puthukkad constituency, falls under the limits of Kodakara block.

The four boundaries of this panchayat are the Western Ghats in the east, Alagappanagar and Puthukkad panchayats in the west, Mattathur panchayat in the south, and Alagappanagar, Puthur and Thrikkur panchayats in the north.

The Chimni Irrigation Project, which was laid by Union Minister Jagjivan Ram in 1976 and dedicated to the nation by the then Chief Minister of Kerala A.K. Antony on March 5, 1996, has become a tourist destination on the Indian map. This scenic center with its mountains and valleys is a paradise for tourists. The forest area adjacent to this dam, which has a place in the national history, is also a wildlife sanctuary. This forest area is rich in many rare wildlife and bird species that are disappearing not only from Kerala but also from the forests of India. The Panchayat is proud to have Chimmini Dam, which contains this rare gift of nature, in Varantharappilly Panchayat.

The Kurumalipuzha, which originates from the Western Ghats in the east and flows to enrich the Chimmini Dam, meets the Muplipuzha at the confluence of two rivers in Karikulam and flows through the heart of the Panchayat as a lifeline, enriching the agricultural sector.

The main high hills are Muthumala in the southeast, Mattumalai in the south, Muniyattukunnu in the east, Koranodi Hill in the northwest, and Palappilly Hill in the east.

The only river in the panchayat is the Kurumalli River, which originates from the Western Ghats. Small streams originating from various areas of the panchayat, such as Valiyathode, Pillathode, Kanathode, Karayampadam Thodu, Kutolipadam Thodu, and Kuriyadi Thodu, merge into this river, making the Kurumalli River more fertile.

The total area of ​​this panchayat is 10,300 hectares. Of this, 7861.23 hectares of land is covered by the rubber estate area, which is owned by Harrisons Malayalam Limited and Cochin Malabar Estate & Industries Limited.
